Unveiling the Innovative Technology of the Gardian Angel: How Does It Work?

Welcome to one of our most frequently asked questions. How does your Gardian Angel technology work?

The Gardian Angel system, created by Steve Gardner, a former school bus mechanic and fleet maintenance supervisor, utilizes white LED flood lights positioned at the front of the bus to illuminate the path for students crossing the street and enhance their visibility to motorists. This innovative safety device is directed towards the ground and activates automatically when the red lights of the school bus are turned on; deactivating once the bus entrance door is shut. This patented exterior lighting system aims to address stop-arm violations and reduce safety hazards for student passengers by enhancing visibility in low-light conditions and providing a well-lit pathway for pedestrians approaching the bus. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, this system not only helps prevent stop-arm violations but also sets a new standard for state and federal safety regulations. This proactive safety feature is designed to minimize illegal passing incidents, improve visibility for drivers during nighttime operations, and ultimately reduce the risk of injuries and accidents in school bus loading and unloading zones.

The Gardian Angel system's innovative feature of projecting lights onto the ground establishes a 'safety zone' that enhances the visibility of children to drivers. This is particularly advantageous during early morning or dusk hours when visibility is reduced, aiding in clearer communication between children and drivers. By positioning the lights at or below bumper level in accordance with state regulations, children are not dazzled by the light but are effectively guided. During prototype testing, Steve Gardner discovered that placing the Gardian Angel at mirror height would lead to the foreseeable issue of blinding the children and issues related to shadowing.  The company’s testing has proved quite successful as 26 states currently permit the use of the Gardian Angel school bus safety lighting system as optional equipment for school buses to aid in children’s safety.
